In July, I blogged about my food adventures on the West Coast in San Francisco. In August, we paid a visit to the East Coast (of Canada) to visit Halifax in Nova Scotia. There’s just something about port cities with their lively harbous and waterfronts and scenic landscapes that I love!
I adore visiting cities by the ocean because of the delicious and fresh seafood. Halifax was no exception as I got my share of seafood through eating plenty of lobsters, oysters, mussels during our week there 🙂
We went twice to Fisherman’s Market to buy these canner lobsters. Canners are small lobsters that are caught only in selective areas during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. They are called “canners” because they are used to process canned lobster meat. Each canner lobster was $6.50, and the meat was incredibly sweet and succulent. I enjoyed each and every bite with garlic butter. Would you believe that I ate five of these over the course of the week (in two sittings)? Lobsters are my absolute favourite food, and these canners were pretty small, after all 😉
We visited the Five Fishermen Restaurant and Grill during their Oyster Happy Hour from 4:30-6:30 PM, with each oyster on special for $1.50. They had a nice variety of raw oysters to choose from.
In addition, they also had quite a variety of baked oysters, also for $1.50 each. I can’t remember the names of each, but I remember really liking the Japanese-style oysters 🙂 After enjoying our oysters in the grill section of the Five Fishermen, we headed upstairs to the formal part of the restaurant. If you order an entree, the salad and mussels bar is included. They offered a variety of sauces to dip your mussels in (such as garlic butter and marinara), and I definitely went back for seconds. This part of the restaurant was quite dark, so I was unable to take pictures of the food upstairs 🙁
After walking around downtown Halifax on a hot afternoon, we were sweating and dying of thirst. To our surprise, we stumbled upon George’s Bubble Tea. Halifax is not brimming with Asian restaurants or Asian grocery stores (especially compared to San Francisco!), so we were surprised to find this establishment. George’s Bubble Tea is the first (and as far as I know only) bubble tea shop in Halifax. We ordered the papaya slush with tapioca, not knowing what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised when George presented us with this delicious-looking snack/drink. The slush was incredibly smooth and flavourful and the tapioca was soft and chewy. Ryan declared that this was one of the best slushes he had ever tasted! Who would’ve thought that we’d find this treat in a quiet little shop in Halifax?
Before we left for the airport on our last day in Halifax, we made a quick stop in McDonald’s to try the McLobster. I love how McDonald’s around the world and in different regions offer local specialties. This lobster roll was about $7 with tax and came with a decent amount of lobster (yay for real lobster!) on a bed of lettuce. The taste was alright (not outstanding, but not too bad either), and I’m glad I can now say I’ve tried it!
Oh, how I ♥ seafood. As we were leaving Halifax, I changed my facebook status to “Stephanie ate 5 lobsters, half a dozen oysters, 30+ mussels and a McLobster in Halifax…I think it’s time to go home now ;)" Indeed it was.
