Materials:

Notes:

  • Gauge: 8 sts and 7 rows = 4”
  • We will be creating a rectangle that has two tapered ends on either side. Each side consists of a top half and a bottom half.
  • These tapered ends will be seamed together to form the twist at the end.
  • This headband is worked in turned rows.
  • Since you cannot see individual stitches, you can feel for the next stitch and use a stitch marker.
  • To increase the circumference of the headband, add more rows to the body of the headband (R7-36).  To decrease the circumference of the headband, decrease the number of rows of the body of the headband (R7-36).
  • Inc (Increase): Work 2 sc in the next stitch. [1 stitch becomes 2 stitches.]
  • Dec (Decrease): Insert hook into next stitch. Yarn over, pull up a loop.  Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops now on hook). Yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. [2 stitches become 1 stitch]

Finished Dimensions: 5”/12.7 cm tall, 22.5”/57 cm circumference

PATTERN:

Top Half (Note that the increases are worked on the same side where the initial yarn end is located. You can put a stitch marker on this side to help you remember where the increases are worked and where the shaping is occurring.  This stitch marker will be at the top of the headband):

Chain 4 (leave long initial end for seaming).

Row 1: Starting in second st from hook, Sc 3. (3 sts)

R2: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Inc, Sc 2. (4 sts)

R3: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 4. (4 sts)

R4: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Inc, Sc 3. (5 sts)

We have now finished the top half of the tapered edge. Fasten off (you do not need to leave a long end as you will be weaving it in).

Bottom Half (Note that the increases are worked on the opposite side of where the initial yarn end is. You can put a stitch marker on this side to help you remember where the increases are worked and where the shaping is occurring.  This stitch marker will be at the bottom of the headband):

Chain 4 (you do not need to leave a long initial end for seaming).

Row 1: Starting in second st from hook, Sc 3. (3 sts)

R2: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 2, Inc. (4 sts)

R3: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 4. (4 sts)

R4: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 3, Inc. (5 sts)

We have now finished the bottom half of the tapered edge. Do not fasten off.  We will continue crocheting the next row and then join it to the top half of the headband.

Position the top and bottom halves together so that the stitch markers are located on the outer edges of the headband as shown in diagram below (increases have been worked on outer edges). You will be crocheting 5 stitches along the bottom half and then 5 stitches along the top half to join the two halves together.

Body of Headband (continues from bottom half)

R5: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 5 across bottom half, then Sc 5 across top half. (10 sts)

R6: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 10. (10 sts)

R7-36: Repeat Row 6 or until desired length.  My headband measured about 19”/48 cm at this point.  The tapered edges in the subsequent rows will add about 3-3.5”/8-9 cm of length.

We will now split off into two tapered edges once again: a Top Half and a Bottom Half. Note that the decreases will now be worked towards the outer edges to shape them.

Top Half (continues from body):

R37: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 5. (Leave the rest of the sts unworked as we will use them to crochet the Bottom Half later on.) (5 sts)

R38: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 3, Dec. (4 sts)

R39: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 4. (4 sts)

R40: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 2, Dec. (3 sts)

Fasten off and leave long end for seaming.

Bottom Half:

There are 5 unworked stitches left since we worked 5 stitches in Row 37 of the Top Half. Rejoin yarn in the middle of the headband as indicated by the stitch marker. To do this, make a slip knot. Insert hook in indicated stitch. Place slip knot on hook and pull through the space. Chain 1 and continue with pattern (chain 1 does not count as a stitch).  Note that the first sc of the row will be worked in this same stitch.

R37: Sc 5 across. (5 sts)

R38: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Dec, Sc 3. (4 sts)

R39: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Sc 4. (4 sts)

R40: Chain 1, turn. Starting in second st from hook, Dec, Sc 2. (3 sts)

Fasten off (you do not need to leave a long end for seaming).

Assembly:

  • You now have a rectangle with tapered ends on either side.  Each side has a top half and a bottom half that each consists of 3 stitches.
  • Take one top half and one bottom half from the SAME side and seam the edges (3 sts) together using the yarn tail that you left.
  • Take the top half of the other side and insert it into the hole created by the other two halves. Seam the remaining top half and bottom half edges (3 sts) together using the yarn tail that you left.
  • Weave in all the ends.

Here is a step-by-step breakdown of the assembly process. Please reference the collage photos:

  1. The tapered ends consist of a top half and a bottom half
  2. Take the top half and the bottom half from the same side and lay them on top of one another.
  3. Whip stitch the ends together – each end consists of 3 stitches.
  4. The ends have been whip stitched together, and now there is a hole in between the two halves.

5. Place your fingers through the underside of the hole.

6. Pull the top half of the opposite/second side through the hole.

7. Take the top half and bottom half from this second side and place them on top of each other. Whip stitch the ends together (also consists of 3 sts).

8. The twist in the center of the headband has been created!

Fluffy bucket hats and headbands have been very popular lately, and I love how we can create our own using textured yarn! The fleece sherpa yarn by Lion Brand Yarn is incredibly soft, and it comes in some gorgeous shades. I was inspired to whip up a fleece headband because I had left-over yarn from my Fleece Panda amigurumi project. If you have any spare fleece yarn in your stash, you can use it to crochet a headband!

When you wear the headband, it feels like your head is being enveloped by a soft and fluffy cloud! It makes such a lovely and bold statement, and it is amazing how quickly this project works up using jumbo yarn. You can finish making a headband in one sitting so you get that immediate gratification!

I hope you enjoy crocheting your own Fleece Sherpa Twist Headbands! I had a lot of fun figuring out how I wanted to construct the twist in the center without creating too much bulk since this is jumbo yarn. I love how the shaping turned out for the tapered ends, and I think the resultant twist is very elegant. I hope you enjoy making these twist headbands as gifts for friends and family as well!
