For my birthday this year, I commissioned a local cookie artist to make some very special cookies! I have long admired Lydia’s artistry through her account “Cookiesandcravings” on Instagram. Lydia is so talented with her amazing attention to detail and use of color, and she’s made so many beautiful cookie sets for birthdays, baby showers and other special occasions with a multitude of different themes. I reached out to Lydia and asked if she would take on a custom commission to make DAISY GRANNY SQUARE COOKIES! I had never seen anyone attempt to translate the look of granny squares into cookie form, so I thought it would be a neat challenge as I wanted to see Lydia’s take on the theme!
Thankfully, Lydia accepted the commission and asked what three colors we wanted to focus on. I sent her pictures of the Cozy Days Daisy Blanket for the Agave color, the Cozy Days Daisy Cardigan for the Rose Water color, and the Breezy Days Daisy Bag for the Taupe color. Lydia also requested that I send her a high quality flat lay photo of a single daisy granny square so that she could use it as a reference to mimic the stitches in royal icing. I sent her a single photo of the “Cozy Days Daisy Granny Square“!
When Lydia sent me photos of the finished cookies, my jaw dropped – I thought they were my crocheted granny squares at first glance! We were so excited to pick them up and see them in real life. Here are the cookies in their box! When my daughter Brielle saw this box of cookies on our counter, she said she was wondering why I had placed my crocheted granny squares in a box haha!
This is the pink daisy granny square cookie! I cannot believe how realistic and intricate the cookies look and how Lydia was able to capture the texture of crochet stitches. She must have spent so much time piping the icing with each and every stroke!
Aren’t the colors absolutely beautiful? She really nailed the colors, and they look so gorgeous against the lovely and cheerful daisies!
Here is a side-by-side comparison showing the daisy granny square cookie on the left and the “Summer Days Daisy Granny Square” on the right! Note that the cookie is based on the “Cozy Days Daisy Granny Square” (uses different stitches for the last round), but I wanted to hold these two next to each other since they are similar in size and color!
I shared these cookies with my family on my birthday, and everyone was marveling at how lovely they were. Some didn’t have the heart to eat such a beautiful work of art! It is so neat how our artistic talents can be expressed in different ways and in different mediums, from yarn and paint, to clay and cookies! Below you can see the process of Lydia piping the icing onto these special cookies:
This video shows me unboxing my beautiful daisy granny square birthday cookies and placing them on the tiered tray! When I shared this video on social media, many of you were astounded that they were cookies as you thought that they were real granny squares!
Lydia did such an amazing job translating these crochet daisy granny squares into cookies, and I am so thankful that we could work together! If you are in the Edmonton area and are looking for a custom cookie artist, you can send Lydia a DM for order inquiries/collabs HERE and follow her on Instagram to see more of her wonderful work (@Cookiesandcravings)! Thank you for creating these gorgeous cookies, Lydia – they were such a great way to make my birthday extra special!
