Bulky Dotty Beanie Knit Pattern

Materials:

Notes:

  • These beanies are knit in the round starting with the initial ribbing, the dot stitch for the main body, and decreases worked towards the top of the crown.
  • Only a few rounds of ribbing are worked to help frame the dot stitch without taking away from the beautiful texture of the main dot stitch.  If you wish to have more ribbing, you can increase the number of ribbed rounds at the beginning of the pattern.
  • If you would like to adjust the number of stitches for the cast-on, be sure to make it a multiple of 4.  Add more stitches to make the beanie wider and decrease the number of stitches to make it narrower.
  • To make the hat slouchier with more height, add more rounds to the body.  To make the hat shorter, decrease the number of rounds in the body.
  • If you would like to make the ribbing tighter, you can use 6.5 mm needles for the ribbed section and then switch to 8 mm needles for the body of the beanie using the dot stitch.  You can also use 6.5 mm needles for the entire beanie if you would like to make the overall beanie smaller.
  • This pattern uses the dot stitch which staggers purl stitches among knit stitches for a beautifully textured and dotted look.  The dot stitch is worked over four rounds.
  • Keep checking to make sure your purl stitches are lining up appropriately in the body of the hat.  Once you begin the decreases, the purl stitches will no longer line up, but it is not very noticeable since it is towards the top of the hat.
  • The decreases (K2tog or knit 2 stitches together) are worked in the knit stitch rounds (not the rounds where there are purl stitches).
  • For a seamless join at the very beginning, cast on an extra stitch (i.e. 57 stitches for the adult beanie). Slip the first stitch purlwise onto the working needle. Take the extra stitch that was made (now second stitch on the working needle) and slip it over the slipped stitch (now the first stitch on the working needle). Pull yarn tail and working yarn tightly and add stitch marker. Continue with pattern. You do not need to cast on any extra stitches in subsequent rounds. See how to do this HERE!
  • I recommend using a stitch marker to help you keep track of your rounds.
  • The Dot Stitch consists of these 4 rounds:
    • Round 1: *P1, K3* around.
    • Round 2: Knit around.
    • Round 3: K2. *P1, K3*, repeat around until two stitches remain.  P1, K1.
    • Round 4: Knit around.
  • Add a yarn or faux fur pom pom as an optional finishing touch!

Finished Dimensions:

  • Adult Beanie: 20”/51 cm circumference, 9.5”/24 cm tall
  • Child Beanie: 19”/48 cm circumference, 9”/23 cm tall
  • Baby Beanie (~3 mos): 13”/33 cm circumference, 6”/15 cm tall

I hope you enjoy whipping up these Bulky Dotty Beanies! I have already made myself two more beanies using colors that I wanted to add to my wardrobe: Arrowwood (using left-over yarn from my Woodbury Cardigan) and Cream (using left-over Woolspun I had in my stash). I love having a variety of colors to choose from when I am determining which beanie to wear with an outfit!
