Crochet 4 triangles in total. Block the individual granny triangles to the listed dimensions and to define the edges and smooth out the stitches.
SEAMING GRANNY SQUARES TOGETHER
Arrange 12 granny squares as shown below.
We will use the whip stitch to seam the 12 granny squares together to get a flat seam. One long strand of yarn will whip stitch 16 sides together strategically (14 sides when laid flat and then 2 additional sides when the tube is joined together).
I used a 200”/508 cm long strand for this seam, but if you find it too cumbersome to use such a long strand, you can divide it into shorter strands. To determine how long of a yarn strand you need for your size, multiply the length of the granny square side by 16 and then multiply that number by 2.3.
Starting from the red dot, use the long yarn strand to seam the granny squares together following the diagram below (you will be seaming 14 sides during this part).
Using the whip stitch, go through both the front and back loops of both granny squares. Note that the wrong sides of the granny squares should always be facing you when seaming (even though some of the pictures might show the right sides facing up). Be sure to whip stitch loosely as you do not want the seams to be too tight and bunched up when you are wearing the tank top.
Fold the piece sideways (11 moves sideways towards 2 and 12 moves sideways towards 3) so that the top tips of the granny squares are lined up.
Next, fold the side granny square (1) in half and seam those last two sides (sides 15 and 16) to close up the tube (continue using the same yarn strand).
Next we will use one long strand of yarn to seam the four triangles to the bottom of the tank top to give a flat bottom edge. One triangle will be attached in the middle of the tank top (one on the front side and one on the back side). The remaining two triangles will be folded in half and seamed in each corner as shown in the diagram below.
Starting from the red dot, use the long strand of yarn to whip stitch the eight sides together (four sides along the front and four sides along the back). My yarn strand was approximately 101”/257 cm (5.5” times 8 times 2.3).
Now you can head to Part 3 of the tank top pattern HERE in which you will learn how to crochet the top edging, straps, bottom edging and how to work a clean finish!
