Sizing Chart (in inches):
Granny Square & Triangle:
Notes:
- This tank top is constructed of 12 granny squares and 4 triangles that are seamed together in a special way.
- Three different shades of 24/7 Cotton are used to crochet the daisy granny square. Color A is the background frame color (“Cool Grey” in this pattern), Color B is the color of the petals (“Ecru”) and Color C is the color of the daisy center (“Goldenrod”).
- The daisy granny square is crocheted in joined rounds. The number of rounds varies depending on your size, and generally: Rounds 1 and 2 are the center of the daisy (single crochet stitches) and Round 3 consists of the petals (clusters). Rounds 4 and onwards are the background frame.
- Additional rounds of the granny square are added to increase the size of the sides and diagonals which then increases the size of the tank top. Generally adding one round of double crochets increases the granny square side by 1.5”/3.8 cm while adding one round of half double crochets increases the granny square side by 1”/2.5 cm.
- As additional rounds are added for increasing sizes, the center daisy gets more rounds of background frames and appears relatively “smaller”. If you want this to be less noticeable, you can crochet the tank top in one color only so the daisies and background frames are the same color.
- The dimensions listed in the granny square chart are after blocking. Be sure to achieve these dimensions as this directly affects the finished size of the tank top. If you cannot achieve the desired size, you can try adjusting your hook size (moving up or down a size) or try the granny square pattern for a different size (e.g. Large instead of Medium).
- The triangle is crocheted in turned rows and mirrors the daisy granny square. In the triangle pattern, the turning chains at the beginning and end of the rows do not count as stitches (do not count them in the final stitch count at the end of the row in brackets).
- For each size, the length of the granny square side should equal the length of the triangle side. The diagonal of the granny square should equal the long side (hypotenuse) of the triangle.
- The total number of rounds of the granny square should equal the total number of rows of the triangle. The total number of stitches at the end of each row of the triangle should equal half the total number of stitches at the end of the corresponding round of the granny square (e.g. if Round 5 of the granny square has 64 stitches, Row 5 of the triangle should have 32 stitches.)
- One triangle requires about half the yardage of one granny square.
- You can crochet over the yarn tails when switching yarn colors. I like to crochet over the yarn tails and also weave them in the opposite direction for added security.
- Once all 12 granny squares and 4 triangles have been crocheted, they are laid out in a special arrangement and seamed together using the whip stitch (gives a flat seam).
- When whip stitching the granny squares together, have the wrong sides of the granny squares facing you. This results in a cleaner seam on the right side of the tank top.
- Stitches are then picked up for the top edging of the tank, and both straps are worked. These stitches are worked in the round. One more round is worked in the middle of the tank top to build up the top edging and width of the straps.
- You can adjust the length of the straps based on your personal preference and where you want the tank top to sit. I am 5’6 for reference.
- Stitches are then picked up along the bottom of the tank top to smooth it out. A delicate picot edging using a 4 mm hook is added as the final round for a beautiful decorative touch. You can try different edgings such as the crab stitch or shell stitch, or add fringe or tassels to the bottom of the tank top!
- Block the individual granny squares to the listed size in the chart. After your tank top is complete, block the final tank top, the straps and the top and bottom edging to relax the fibers and smooth out the stitches. This results in better drape when you are wearing your tank top.
- Be sure to check out the “Breezy Days Daisy Bag” video tutorial in which I demonstrate how to crochet each round of this granny square. Check out the “Breezy Days Daisy Tank Top” to see how to crochet the granny triangle, assemble them together, and work the top and bottom edging of the tank top.
Single-Colored Tank Notes:
If you want to use only one yarn color for the entire tank top, you can follow the same instructions but do not cut the yarn when going from round to round (square) or row to row (triangle).
*Daisy Granny Square:
- When finishing Round 3 of the daisy granny square, you can slip stitch to the next ch-3 space and then begin Round 4.
*Daisy Granny Triangle:
- When using one color for the triangle, do not fasten off at the end of Row 2. At the beginning of Row 3, chain 5, turn and work cluster – then continue on with the rest of the row as written but do not fasten off at end.
- At the beginning of Row 4, follow these instructions: Chain 1, turn. Slip stitch 2 up the chain 5 from previous row. Then you can continue following the instructions as written in Row 4 of the triangle.
- Depending on the total number of rows of your triangle, there may or may not be a clear right versus wrong side of the triangle. If you have an odd number of rows, the right side of the triangle is the side with the petals and last row facing the right way. If you have an even number of rows, you can determine which side you want to be the right side during assembly (with either petals facing right way or last row facing right way).
Sizing Notes:
- This tank top is designed with between 0-4” of negative ease depending on the size (please refer to sizing chart). For example, the size small has between 1-3” of negative ease. This means that if your actual bust is 32”, the tank top bust is 31” or 1” tighter.
- The bust of the tank top is four times the length of the diagonal of the granny square.
- The length of the tank top is double the length of the diagonal of the granny square plus the bottom edging.
- If you would like to make your tank top longer, you can either add four more granny squares to this design (add them where the four triangles are added) or add more single crochet rows to the bottom of the tank top.
- I am wearing a size Small and I am about 5’6 for height reference.
- This pattern is written for the following sizes: Small, Medium, Large, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X and 5X. Be sure to follow the granny square and triangle pattern as written for your specific size!
Abbreviations & Special Stitches:
- Magic Ring (MR): Make a loop. Hold yarn where ends cross. Insert hook into loop and pull up working yarn. Yarn over and work beginning chains. Work subsequent stitches in magic ring and then pull tight to close.
- Beginning cluster: Ch 2, [YO, insert hook in st, YO, pull up a loop, YO, draw through 2 loops], rep 3 times in same st, YO, draw through 4 loops on hook.
- Cluster: [YO, insert hook in st, YO, draw up a loop, YO, draw through 2 loops on hook], rep 4 times in same st, YO, draw through 5 loops on hook.
- Invisible single crochet decrease (can be worked across 2 or 3 stitches in this pattern):
- When worked across 2 stitches: Insert hook into front loops of next 2 stitches. YO, pull through 2 loops. YO, pull through both loops.
- When worked across 3 stitches: Insert hook into front loops of next 3 stitches. YO, pull through 3 loops. YO, pull through both loops.
