Notes:

  • This bag is constructed of 13 granny squares that are seamed together in a special way.
  • Three different shades of 24/7 Cotton are used to crochet the daisy granny square.  Color A is the background frame color (“Taupe” in this pattern), Color B is the color of the petals (“Ecru”) and Color C is the color of the daisy center (“Goldenrod”).
  • The daisy granny square consists of 6 rounds: Rounds 1 and 2 are the center of the daisy (single crochet stitches) and Round 3 consists of the petals (clusters). Rounds 4, 5 and 6 are the background frame.
  • You can crochet over the yarn tails when switching yarn colors.  I like to crochet over the yarn tails and also weave them in the opposite direction for added security.
  • Once all 13 granny squares have been crocheted, they are laid out in a special arrangement and seamed together using the whip stitch (gives a flat seam).
  • When whip stitching the granny squares together, have the wrong sides of the granny squares facing you. This results in a cleaner seam on the right side of the bag.
  • Stitches are then picked up along the top edge of the bag to form the top edging and strap. These stitches are worked in the round. Subsequent rounds are worked in the waistcoat stitch for a dense edge and strap with less stretch.
  • You can adjust the length of the straps based on where you want the bag to hang and your height.  I am 5’6 for reference. Keep in mind that your bag will hang a bit lower once you have filled it with contents and more weight is added to it.
  • Stitches are then picked up along the inner edge of the strap and top edging of the dip of the V to form a wider and more secure strap.
  • You can block the final bag to relax the fibres and smooth out the stitches.  I like to block the seams and straps to give a polished finishing touch.
  • You can purchase a medium size interior bag organizer if you would like to add some compartments and zipper closure to this bag as it perfectly fits inside.
  • Be sure to check out the daisy granny square video tutorial on my blog and YouTube in which I demonstrate how to crochet each round. In the video, I also demonstrate how I add a new color, crochet over the yarn end, and weave the yarn end in the opposite direction as well!
  • If you want to use only one yarn color for the entire bag, you can follow the same instructions but do not cut the yarn when going from round to round. When finishing Round 3, you can slip stitch to the next ch-3 space and then begin Round 4.

***Please watch my Daisy Granny Square video tutorial below so you can see how to crochet each and every round, how to crochet over the yarn tails, weave in the ends and crochet the strap! You can also find this video on YouTube HERE!

Crochet 13 granny squares in total. You can block the squares to give them defined edges and to smooth out the stitches.

Seaming Granny Squares Together

Read this section to get a general idea of how the 13 granny squares will be arranged and folded to form the bag. Later on, we will detail how exactly to seam the granny squares together.

Arrange 13 granny squares as shown below. This graphic shows how certain granny squares will be folded to form the bag.

Wildrose Market Bag

Once the 13 squares have been seamed together, we will be folding the piece upwards (10 moves upwards towards 2 and 13 moves upwards towards 5) so that the top tips of the granny squares are lined up. Next, we will fold the side granny squares (1 and 9) in half inwards upon themselves so that the side tips are pointing towards the granny square in the middle.

Wildrose Market Bag

Lastly, we will whip stitch the remaining edges to help the piece keep its shape: the diagonal edges of Granny Square 1 and 9 and the outer diagonal edges of Granny Squares 3/6 and 8/12.

Whip Stitching Squares

We will use the whip stitch to seam the 13 granny squares together to get a flat seam. We will strategically use 3 strands of yarn to seam all the granny squares together.

Cut 3 strands of yarn to these lengths:

  • Yarn Strand 1: 150”/380 cm
  • Yarn Strand 2: 80”/203 cm
  • Yarn Strand 3: 80”/203 cm

Starting from the bottom red dot, use Yarn Strand 1 to seam the granny squares together following the diagram below (you will be seaming 12 sides). Once you have reached the bottom again (after side 12), you can fasten off this yarn strand.

Using the whip stitch, go through both the front and back loops of both granny squares. Note that the wrong sides of the granny squares should always be facing you when seaming (even though some of the pictures might show the right sides facing up).

Next, use Yarn Strands 2 and 3 to seam the side granny squares to the main piece (2 sides each). Do not fasten off as we will continue using Yarn Strands 2 and 3 in the next step.

This collage shows what the bag will look like when you are folding it upwards. Note how you can see Yarn Strands 2 and 3 at the top as they will be ready to seam the final sides.

Continue using Yarn Strands 2 and 3 to whip stitch the remaining sides to help the piece keep its shape (3 more diagonals on each side). Then you can fasten off and weave in these yarn ends.

***Note that the rest of the pattern is taken from the “Wildrose Market Bag” tutorial as the way the top edging and strap is worked is exactly the same. Please reference this blog post HERE for all the tutorial photos.

Top Edging & Strap

We will now be crocheting the top edging and straps of the bag that are worked along the top edges of the granny squares. We will be working in joined rounds.

Using 2.75 mm hook,

Round 1: Starting in right corner of top edge, sc in each stitch around top edges of both granny squares of one side, and then the top edges of both granny squares of the other side. To do so, make a slip knot. Insert your crochet hook into right corner. Add the slip knot and pull through. Yarn over and chain 1. Work a sc in same st and continue single crocheting around. At the end of the round, sl st to first sc.

During this next round, we will be crocheting two straps that emerge from the top tips of the granny squares.

Round 2: Chain 1, sc in same stitch. Waistcoat stitch/center single crochet along edge of first granny square. When you reach the top tip, it is time to work the strap. Chain 85 for the strap. Being careful not to twist the chain, sc to top tip of second granny square. Continue working waistcoat st around until top tip of next granny square. It is time to work the second strap: chain 85 (be careful not to twist the chain) and sc to last top tip. Waistcoat st until end. At the end of the round, sl st to first sc.

Round 3: Chain 1, sc in same stitch. Work waistcoat st around and work sc in chains. At the end of the round, sl st to first sc.

Round 4: Chain 1, sc in same stitch. Work waistcoat st around, including in stitches of strap. At the end of the round, sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in end.

Inner Strap & Dip of V

We will now be building up the top edging in the dip of the V and increasing the width of the strap. We will repeat the steps written below for each side. Choose any side and begin (does not matter which side).

Using 2.75 mm hook,

Round 1: Make a slip knot and insert your crochet hook into dip of V. Add the slip knot and pull through. Yarn over, chain 1, work a sc in same st. Waistcoat st around and work single crochets along sides of the top edging. Continue working along underside of strap by inserting hook into upside down V underneath horizontal bars. When you are approaching the end of the round, skip last sc, slip st to first sc.

Round 2: Chain 1, sc in same st. Waistcoat st around, along dip of V and along straps. When you are approaching the end of the round, skip last sc, slip st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in end.

Repeat above steps for the other side.

Block the final bag to relax the fibres and smooth the stitches, seams and straps!

*******************************

I adore crocheting granny square bags! There is something so magical about making individual squares, arranging them in different shapes, and seeing them come together to become a functional bag. Daisies are so dainty and sweet, and I think they look so beautiful scattered throughout the bag at the centers of the granny squares!

Breezy Days Daisy Bag Crochet Pattern

I love how the Breezy Days Daisy Bag looks when worked up using only one color of yarn! It has such an elegant and timeless look. I know you will have lots of fun choosing your colors and color combinations – some of my pattern testers are already working on their second bags since they loved making the first one so much!

When you are using your daisy bag out and about, don’t forget that you can add a bag organizer inside to instantly add zipper closure and compartments! The medium size bag organizer fits inside, and is a nice alternative to sewing a liner if you do not wish to bring out your sewing machine.

These bags make wonderful gifts as well! I absolutely adore designing and crocheting bags, and I love how functional they are since you can use them out and about. They are very portable when you are working on them as well, so they can be travel projects. I hope you enjoy using your Breezy Days Daisy Bags on all your adventures!
